Politicals.

Written by Erin on August 31, 2008 – 12:55 pm

Politicals for a media buyer mean bumped spots, lack of inventory and increased rates. For everyone else its constantly being berated by negative smear ads, cheesy pro-American spots and never ending news coverage.

But I can fully support Captain Morgan’s political advertising.

He put together a spot on his campaign platform as well as a Facebook page in support of his presidency.

I’ll be voting for the Captain because he supports 2 day work weeks and 5 day weekends!

Jail.

Written by Erin on August 30, 2008 – 3:38 pm

I was catching up on my blog reading and stumbled across this gem from Public School Intelligentsia about Bob from the Enzyte spots I hate.

Apparently, not only are the ads horrible, the pills don’t actually work. The company’s founder is now facing 25 years in jail and the company will forfeit $33 million in the pill scam. I’m just stoked that I will no longer have to see another  one of the TV spots.

You can read the official FBI report here.

HA. That’s what you get for making horrendous ads (and a product that doesn’t work).

Waste.

Written by Erin on August 29, 2008 – 4:28 pm

Usually I don’t care if you waste my time at work. My time card needs billable hours and as a media planner, your usually wasting my time while buying me drinks and lunch. So thanks.

But I do care if you’re wasting my time when I’m trying to actually work. Like when its the Friday before a holiday weekend and I’m trying to make it a half day and yet 15 minutes before there’s a client meeting, you’re trying to figure out what you’re selling.

Its not my fault that you don’t understand what all this “internet language” means. If your job is to sell ad space on a website, then please take a couple hours and get up to speed on why I might be interested on how many unique visitors come to your site.

Calling me “honey,” “sweetheart,” and “angel” do not help. Ever.

If you really have our competitor ready to sign on the dotted line for the category exclusive ad space you’re offering us, then by all means don’t let my thorough evaluation get in the way of you wasting our competitor’s ad budget.

Oh and when I send you a list of questions giving your “tech guy” a shot at deciphering this crazy language I speak, then do no call me back on a conference call and offer to “walk me through a couple of the answers.” I said email them back to me because I want your answers in writing. I don’t trust you and I want to use that email in against you in the future.

One last thing, if you’re pitching me an e-blast program utilizing your email Read more »

Clients.

Written by Erin on August 28, 2008 – 6:40 pm

I spent most of today at a client meeting and I actually enjoyed myself.

The client was gracious but stern, interested but respected our expertise. Maybe its the lack of sleep or remnants from my sick day this week…or maybe I just don’t go see clients often enough.

Client approved my first Behavioral Targeting campaign (woooo). I’m excited to get to use all the sneaky big brother stats the web stores about everyone (even you!). Lack of privacy slightly creeps me out, but its so beneficial as an advertiser! I’ll keep all ten of my readers updated on what I find ;)

Local.

Written by Erin on August 27, 2008 – 2:23 pm

Local automotive advertising is rarely thought of beyond deals, incentives and star bursts. But sometimes local auto ads break through the clutter and bring the auto brand as a whole to a new level. If I lived anywhere near this dealership I would sell my Jetta and buy a Toyota from them.

Olympics.

Written by Erin on August 26, 2008 – 10:12 am

My office hosted Office Olympics two Fridays ago. A spirited day of Olympic games (and some work) with each employee representing a country of their choice. We had 8 events from racing around the building with a full coffee cup to who could print something the fastest (it is OFFICE Olympics after all).

I represented Iceland, an amazing country I spent 2 weeks visiting last summer. It’s a gorgeous and intriguing place – if you ever get the chance or just have some time do not pass up the opportunity to go. To represent my country I spent the day wrapped up in my winter coat, a scarf, winter hat, mittens and was dialing the AC down whenever I had a chance.

Amazingly, I ended up with 3 silver medals and placed fourth in the overall Olympic medals.

In the end of the real Olympics this Sunday, the Icelandic Handball Team took silver losing to France in the gold medal game. It was only the 4th Olympic medal the small country has ever claimed (they previously had 1 silver and 2 bronze). YAY Iceland!

I’ll be drinking some Black Death this weekend in celebration :)

You can read more about the Icelandic Handball team from the Washington Post or from Iceland Review.

Trumpets.

Written by Erin on August 25, 2008 – 9:32 am

In college one my roommate and I built an army of peeps outside of our friend’s room during a boring winter afternoon. A small fleet of yellow, pink an blue peeps flooding the hallway. All but one of the fluffy bunnies was knocked over and the lone yellow soldier had a note sticking out of him. “Help“. The scene from their front door was hilarious I swear.

Maybe my strange food humor is why I love these spots so much….or maybe its that they are completely and utterly random.

Bring on the Trumpets!

I aplogize I don’t speak pineapple.

My house has an entire floor for pilates.

Slammed.

Written by Erin on August 21, 2008 – 5:03 pm

Or as we say at my agency in the red.

There is a special kind of in the red that we like to call Hell Week. It’s (at least) five sweet days of stress and panic that usually culminates in a breakdown and booze.

Rarely are there multiple Hell Weeks occurring within an office at anytime, but its not unheard of to see a department enduring it together.

They are usually caused by a co-worker out on vacation, multiple important deadlines, random mistakes, procrastination (usually to blame for my Hell Weeks) and of course not enough hours or energy to get everything done.

You can do nothing to resolve them except just get through them. Eat lunch at your desk, be the first to arrive and the last to leave, drink enough coffee and diet coke to make you feel like you couldn’t stop moving if you tried.

Instinct.

Written by Erin on August 20, 2008 – 12:25 pm

Now that I’m on the prowl for a new phone I’ve started to notice the incredibly annoying the Sprint Instinct spots that seem to be on every commercial break. They even annoy me as I fast forward past them on my DVR.

I don’t even have a real critique, its just when ever they’re on I cringe and gag a little. So please enjoy the spots I pulled on Sprint Instinct’s Product Placement Campaign.
