There has been some good advertising for cancer recently.
Stand Up For Cancer ran in Wired and Blender to promote their telethon and it was actually good. The copy of the ad is straight to the point without making me defensive or dismissive. Casey Affleck looks like your ‘average’ guy so it doesn’t feel like a cheesy celeb endorsemen. Unfortunately I can’t find the a picture of the ad online but Stand Up to Cancer has a Facebook page and a website.
Then I saw ads for the Cancer Institute of Australia. If these don’t break your heart and make you want to desperately want to fund a cure, then you’re absolutely heartless.

I totally and completely agree with this article from imedia connection. Sums up exactly what I hate the most about ad networks and general website vendors.

There is a lot of argument amongst advertisers, social media users and the online gurus as to where advertising stands in the lines of social media.
Is it really ok to make your brand a “friend” or to ask people to become your “fan”?
Do banner ads and text ads intrude on the social space on the web?
What does engagement really mean?
Do social media users respond to advertising while in the midst of a conversation with their friends Can social media really monetize itself and prove that their worth the billions of dollars marked on their price tags?
Honestly, I have no flippin clue to any of those answers.
I recently stumbled on these two (1 and 2) posts from smash!ng apps with some really great creative print ads. Below are a couple of my favorite but visit smash!ngapps for the full collection.
Twitter is a great tool that so few people have learned to take advantage of, but one local police department has learned to utilize micro blogging as a public service tool. The Scottsdale, AZ PD tweets about traffic issues, breaking news like bomb scares, missing people updates and other crime news. I’m surprised that San Francisco police didn’t think of this first and I hope San Diego is next!
OtherInbox- the only beta I signed up for on day one. Great concept, super useful.
Tonchidot- by far the best presentation “Join us’ sometimes the language barrier plays in your favor. Watch the video of their presentation- its awesome…product seems pretty sweet too.
Swype- I remember Kevin Rose mentioning this on an episode of Diggnation (or maybe I’m making that up). Coolest application, I want it and I want it now.
If I was a musicain I would want BoJam. Open source music in an online wiki.
Atmosphir is one of the cooler concepts and a really original concept.
This is like a high tech Clueless closet- Closet Couture although I’m not sure I would actually use it.
Unfortunately, I missed a lot of the presentations due to streaming this at work and actually having work to do instead of devoting my full attention to the ustream.
