Back.

Written by Erin on November 18, 2008 – 12:45 pm

Back from a busy week and a vacation…apparently I missed a lot!

First there was the Motrin Mom scandal in Twitterville summarized very nicely by AdAge

Jerry Yang left Yahoo…do you think he actually used rpoper grammer on this employee memo? (Hint: No)

Crazy debates happening regarding the automotive industry’s request for money from the government. Congress went crazy today….if they fail there will be a lot of hurting agencies.

Wondering who is getting laid off and what companies are failing? Check out FuckedStartUps.com which is almost as much fun as the Technocrati dead pool of startups.

I’ve recently learned to love Hulu and Yidio…Hulu now becoming big competion to YouTube.

No more ValleyWag?? Ugh its not like PerezHilton is going to start covering the Silicon Valley.

Fuck even Turkeys have social media down…why the hell can’t I convince clients!

Ugh back to catching up at work and sorting through, emails, voicemails and job tickets.

Internet.

Written by Erin on November 9, 2008 – 5:52 pm

I previously posted about Obama’s ability to connect to voters through his incredibly savvy use of the internet and hiring a team of people who knew how to harness its capabilites. For this reason he is being hailed as the first Internet President for being able to communicate and motivate via his internet marketing.

His win validates the useful of social media and online marketing. Something he clearly recognizes as his presidential did not stop his use of the internet to organize his supporters.

Within a day or two of winning, Obama launched a website to encourage the public to continue to openly communicate with his administration and share their concerns and hopes. Change contains a blog, news, educational information as well as a countdown to Obama’s ingauration and an application to work in the Obama-Biden administration. It also contains a section called the American momment which asks supporters to tell Obama what his win meant to them.

Pretty incredible embrace of new media. I hope he continues it throughout his term in office and sets a precedent for future presidents.

Read more about Obama’s marketing successes here, here and here.

Fujitsu.

Written by Erin on November 7, 2008 – 8:42 am

I’ve previosuly mentioned my love for Wired Magazine. I started reading it when my New Communication Technology class in college forced me to scour magazines to find innovative prooducts that had yet to go mainstream. Wired is the only magazine I subscribe to; the only one I read from cover to cover. While that might secure my reputation as a geek, at least I’m not an insecure woman who has to read about how to be thinner, sexier and better in bed every month (sorry Cosmo readers).

Anywho, I recently stubled across a Fujitsu ad for a scanner with the title Search this: Fujitsu ScanSnap Scanner S300 Reviews. Brilliant. Let your reviewers speak for you because they will anyways. Embrace the web and the way people shop.

Most people type in the name of the URL even when they know it. Reviews and blogs provide the most incentive to actually buy. So well done Fujjitsu! If I needed a scanner or had th emoney to buy one, I totally would.

Layoffs.

Written by Erin on November 6, 2008 – 10:08 am

As the recession continues to kill of the ad industry, there are a lot of blog postings about how to make sure you are not one of those laid off. While I don’t count myself as any sort of expert as I’m only 25 with less than 4 years of experience in this industry, I was able to acquire a job at an agency with no openings and I’ve been able to grow with my firm.

Based on my experience these are my 3 tips.

DVR.

Written by Erin on November 5, 2008 – 11:51 am

Science Daily released an article regarding the effects DVR has had on TV ads. The study “found that ads with brand information placed in the center of the screen still create brand memory despite a 95% reduction in frames viewed and complete loss of audio.”

As a tv viewer who recently discovered the joy of DVR, it totally makes sense. Viewers actively watch during the fast forward process to make sure they stop at the right time, so DVR users are probably more engaged in commercial breaks then the usual TV viewer. The study found that placing the branding message in the center of the screen was the most effective way to reach those using DVR.

So, what should this mean to those who create TV spots that end up in DVR programming?

Corky's.

Written by Erin on November 4, 2008 – 7:38 am

Another example of just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

It looks like they took their full page penny saver ad and tried to make it into banners.

Does Corky’s really get rid of ants in your pants? And for only $69?? Glad they put that in a starburts or I would never be able to find the price within all the copy in the leaderboard. I’m surpirsed the guy isn’t actually dancing with the spiders in his pants.

I can’t even write about the big box ad accompanying it….tragically bad.

I just want to help you Corky’s! Write a comment on this blog and I will help you with your online ads.

As if you really need another reason to vote, Starbucks is giving away coffee to any voter who stops by today.

Vote!

Placement.

Written by Erin on November 3, 2008 – 10:30 pm

AdRants its one of my favorite blogs and I couldn’t help but laugh while reading a post…

When I first saw it I thought all three ads were for the top banner- the two Intel ads being examples of bad ads headed for trouble.

Apparently, those Intel banners are real and really bad.
