Frank.

Written by Erin on May 17, 2009 – 7:59 pm

Frank Duffel is a guy I could see my dad being buddies with – a bit of a hard ass but simple and straight forward. While he puts the “no” in innovation, he somehow ended up with a Facebook page, a youtube series and his own website, but my guess is that the overly ambitious June is responsible for that (see episodes 4 and 5).

Mr.Duffel is the President of The Post Shredded Wheat Co. where they’ve done nothing to change the cereal since 1892. After two two huge achievements, adding milk to cereal and make Post Shredded Wheat spoon size, Post Shredded Wheat has not changed a thing. To fully understand Frank check out his speech on Progress…good stuff.

Well done Ogilvy! It’s incredibly entertaining, sociable and still delivers a powerful message. Heck, I bought a box at the grocery store today and I don’t even eat cereal.

I don’t know why those of us interested in digital, computers, online technical stuff are all deemed to be geeks, but I totally embrace it. Which is why I am so in love with these three geek-tastic things.

Ashton.

Written by Erin on May 12, 2009 – 5:59 am

Twitter spam is the new Nigerian Prince. Ever since the whole Ashton Kutcher race to a million followers I’ve noticed that twitter spam has taken over. So thanks Ashton for teaching people that twitter is not a social media tool, but rather a constant race to gain more followers.

BA (Before Ashton) you’d see a fake profile with a tweet or two pushing some sort of pay for followers or ‘I make millions from click fraud’ ads every day or two. Twitter was usually pretty quick getting rid them and it was not really intrusive so I didn’t mind. But now we have hash-tag spam, porn profiles and generally people who think Twitter is just about getting a lot of followers.

I tired to engage one such spammer, @Toxic_Concepts to try and figure out why they were hash-tag spamming. And while I didn’t really get an answer, they did switch their tactics after my tweets, so I feel like I must have broken through. Now, while I’m pretty sure they are just responding to any tweet they see with random comments back at least they are starting to understand that twitter is about talking to people.

Check out the conversations below.

Questions.

Written by Erin on May 11, 2009 – 4:58 pm

I wasn’t feeling well this morning so I spent some time napping and pondering some of the most perplexing issues in my life right now.

1. Do spammers get annoyed by spam? Have they ever purchased something from a spam email, tweet, blog comment, etc?

2. How many items does SkyMall sell every flight? Which random item is the most frequently purchased?

3. Are the banner ads with dancing people, flashing lights and bright colors really effective at conversion?

4. Why do people think that just because I’m their facebook friend I should belong to every FB group they belong to?

5. Why do people still hate on Twitter?

6. In 5 years, which ad networks will still be around?

7. Why does Victoria’s Secret email me every day? I couldn’t possibly need that many bras and panties.

8. Why do people still use IE?

9. How digital will my 5 year old niece’s life be by the time she’s my age?

10. What’s next?

Google.

Written by Erin on May 10, 2009 – 5:01 pm

Google has decided to go un-digital. To fight for market share for their browser Chrome (which in full disclosure, I love), the giant has launched a TV campaign in Japan.

I have to admit I love it. The perfect mix of traditional and digital, lovely visuals and a funky soundtrack.

Removed.

Written by Erin on May 8, 2009 – 9:35 am

I was going to share with you a spot for US Cellular by Publicis & Hal Riney because I’m in love with the concept. I could watch the crayons un-melt all day. So I grab the link from youtube and stick it in this blog, but then “This video has been removed by user” pops up. Well boooo on you too.

While I get the whole copyright infringement thing, if you make something good enough for people to want to share, why stop them from sharing? Yes, I realize an agency created it, technically it belongs to the client but I want to tell everyone how much I love it and thus you get some free word of mouth.

Lucky you, AdFreak still has a copy up. So check it here.

Cardboard.

Written by Erin on May 7, 2009 – 9:51 am

Cardboard cutout french fries and hamburgers is something my niece would love – she loves to play restaurant -its also the focus of Chilli’s new ad campaign by Hill Holiday. There are spots, banner ads and a website.

pj-blands

As an advertiser I get it, but as a consumer I think “so you’re better than cardboard, good for you but I’m going  somewhere with higher standards.” It is a well executed campaign, the media buyers are on point with placement and integration, but the message is just meh for me.

Check out the spot after the jump.
